I think it was on the NES, but can't be sure. there was also another multiplayer game in it where there are multiple ladders going up the level and you have to get more coins that your opponent (again mario vs luigi)

in super mario 3, two players, when it's mario's turn, luigi's spot will be identifed as an oval with an L in it.

if mario steps on the square with that oval with the L in it, either player can push A and they will go to the original mario game.
-------
in this game, the first four or five times you enter this ...contest between the brothers, you will face various enemies and you need to turn them over and kick them. there are five enemies, and the player to knock out the most, wins. the last enemy will always be blue, and will move faster and/or jump farther.

after a few of these, there is a round where there are five coins - the player to get the most coins wins.

then more enemies, like 4 or 5 more rounds.

then there will be a large pipe in the center that will spew out coins and fireballs. there are only 5 coins, and the player that gets the most coins wins.

then like 4 or 5 rounds of more enemies.

then there is a bunch of floors with 3 blue boxes on each floor, and ladders so you can move up and down the floors. hidden within these boxes are 5 coins in total. the player to get the most coins wins.
------
when you win one of these rounds, the player that won gets the next turn on the world map - so it is possible that in a two player game, only mario ever gets a chance to beat the regular levels.
