I want to replace a huge chandelier with a ceiling fan. I have a narrow beam that is holding up the chandelier, do I need a bigger support beam to hold the fan up? The fan weighs a couple more pounds than the chandelier. I have 116 year old plaster ceilings that i don't want to damage, any suggestions?

if the beam runs the entire length of the room it will easily carry the weight of the fan.

The weight may not have any bearing on the "narrow beam". The stress of the running fan, may.

I think you should, if you can, determine how well the beam is anchored, which should be tied between two overhead joists. If the beam is at least a 2 X 2 and well anchored, it may suffice. I wouldn't trust a 1" X

If it is anchored with nails, those may or may not do. You might consider screws, but pre-drill holes to do that. Old nails can be cut out.

If the beam appears too weak and you have room to work, it could be cut out and a 2 X 4 put in it's place, with screws.

All this is moot, if you can access from the attic. You could then add a support to the old beam or replace it.

You need to make sure you have a ceiling fan box in the attic to hold the weight. Another reason is the fan moves a lot, that is why you need a special box for the ceiling fan. They are not very high. And worth the money.

I used to have a magazine-size book published by the Stanley tool company that tells you exactly how to install a ceiling fan, and explains everything you need to know about other projects. Study the book and you can be a professional electrician. I don't know where the book is now, but it will turn up sooner or later. I bought it at Home Depot, and I'm sure you could get it from amazon.com.

just add the bracket that spans over to the next cieling joist and hook it up. it will carry the weight. I have plaster as well and thats all I did to get mine up instead of not having a lighht or having a small light in my rooms.

the beam should work, if it isnt an old, rotting wood one.
