Actually they are not really mathematical at all. They are games of logic. They use the numbers 1 to 9, but they could just as easily use letters, pictures of flowers or animals or any symbols.
The objective is to fill the grid so that every column, every row and every 3×3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid so that there is only one solution.
The game is very addicting, and there are many on line sites where you can play for free. I am very addicted, but I usually restrict my play to the puzzle in our daily paper and to my sudoku book while we are waiting for appointments.

A Sudoku is a logic game. It's not mathematical at all, really, you can replace the numbers with any symbols and it would be the same. A Sudoku board is a 9x9 grid within which there are nine rows, nine columns, and nine 3x3 boxes. The goal is to used the seeded numbers to complete the grid such that each row has the number 1-9, each column has the numbers 1-9, and each internal 3x3 box has the numbers 1-9. The difficulty varies according to how many and in what positions the seeded numbers are.

A sudoku puzzle is grid of square boxes 9 columns deep and 9 rows wide. It is further divided into 9 smaller boxes 3 squares by 3 squares each.
Each small square, each row and wach column should be filled in with the numbers from 1 to 9. Each number can only appear once in any row, column, or small box.
Depending on the difficulty level of the puzzle, the maker will "seed" the puzzle with several of the numbers in place, and leave the rest blank.
The puzzle solver must use logical, deduction, and guesses to determine the order of the rest of the numbers.
A "solved" sudoku puzzle has the numbers from one to nine in each box, each row, and each column. Remember--no repeats in any row, column or small square!

A 9x9 grid where the numbers in each row and each column are a digit from 1 to 9. In addition, the 3x3 boxes in the grid have similar numbers. Some numbers are seeded to start and you add the others.
