To be a gothic do you have to wear black like everything black
My friend said that if I wanted to be gothic I had to die my hair black and I look really bad with black hair so canI just keep my brown hair?

You can LOOK "goth" or "vampy" if you want. BEING goth is another thing.
You don't have to dye your hair black. Because once you dye your hair black, it'd be hard to take it out once you change your mind, unless you head over to a pro and get it bleached! And you don't always have to wear black. You can wear other dark colors-especially red/maroon.

Goth is more a lifestyle or outlook on life than anything. They tend to accept that there are bad things as well as good things in life, rather than 'sweep them under the rug', to say, and pretend they don't exist. They can dress however they want, although many prefer darker colors and more dramatic clothes and makeup, and listen to lots of songs and varied genres of music, which can include but are by no means limited to, new wave, darkwave, ethereal, Celtic, goth rock, punk, postpunk, chants, heavy metal, industrial, Latin, et cetera. Not all are interested in vampires - in fact, relatively few are. Many if not most have good relationships with their parents. Very few have mental or psychological problems. Most are actually quite nice, if a bit saturnine. Very, very, very few are 'satanists' or 'devil worsippers'. Most of the young teenagers who listen to Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Slipknot, Korn, My Chemical Romance, Drowning Pool, et cetera and wear heavy thick makeup and studded spike collars and bracelets are called 'Mall goths', shop mostly at Hot Topic, and - this is important - they're not real goths. They just seem to think they are. They act disturbed and surly and try to impress/intimidate people. It seldom works, as most are obviously pathetic, and almost all will (thankfully) grow out of it. You don't have be all-black to be goth. Goth is a state of mind, and there are many types of goths. Cybergoths, for example, wear bright colors along with black! If just want to look gothy, try wearing a very pale foundation on your face and neck, staying out of the sun, wearing predominantly black clothes and, most importantly, lots of black eyeliner. Try getting a black skirt and black pantyhose. Put on a black top and handwarmers or armwarmers (try shopping at Hot Topic.) Then wear a pair of big black boots. That IS the traditional, basic gothic look!

to be gothic (no one is forcing you 2 wear black) you need to wear black. And even a little bit of red is okay. Also to be gothic u DO NOT have to dye your hair black!! I have seen alot and i mean alot of goths and some have blonde hair. So no u DO NOT have to dye your hair at all.

gothic isn't just how you dress. It is a way of life. You do not have to dye your hair black to be gothic at all. You can wear pink. You can wear your hair in pig tails if you really wanted to.

Gothic, as it's already been said, is a way of life, not a way you look. Black is generally a gothic sort of thing, but do whatever you want.

just do what u want. if ur friend thinks that then she is a stereotyper and should be boiled in acid. gothic is a way of life. thats like saying to worship jesus u have to wear a robe, have a long beard, and be crusified on easter. ur friend is dumb. sorry but its true

no if u wear dark colors you will be gothic but u do need to obtain some black to ur wardrobe

If you want to be considered to be Gothic it isn't about the look you there is a large community that is all about satin and worships him or is a wiccan.
But Hot Topic is a good place to go. Don't change yourself to be liked or to fit in with your friends it never worked for me please take my advice save you self the trouble.
