Both p except for the part about destroying the world. Conserve some electricity another way and treat yourself to some good old fashioned spiritualism. Or, you could just burn a lot of candles and bonfires. Festivals of lights are among the oldest spiritual celebrations to mark the winter solstice. On the days before, on and after the solstice it is considered a tribute to the sungods to encourage to, and then thank them for, letting the sun come back up in the sky and not keep on sinking. It's a pagan thing, so don't tell the born agains or atheists or they'll try to make it illegal.

Well there are outside lights and outside lights! We have a some tiny blue ones in a bush outside that look magical and pretty, especially when the bush is frosty. I don't personally like the overdone, bling lights with a santa on the roof and a huge blow-up unlikely looking snowman on the lawn.

If we are talking about waste of electric, what about the massive displays in shops and towns?

I don't like them very much but accept that a great deal of people do. Here in the Huddersfield area, one family have a huge display of outside lights and they collect money for charity from people stopping to admire them...they have raised thousands of £s in the past, so I guess that's a good enough reason to put up with them.

Definitely a bit of fun to brighten up the gloomiest part of the year.A couple of simple sets of plain outdoor fairy lights draped around a bare tree or a hedge and plugged into a timer set to go on from, say four pm to ten pm, won't waste too much power ( or look trashy) and will lift your spirits. Go for it!

Outside Christmas lights are a bit of fun! They allow individuals to express their creative ways (or not so..) with lights and decorations. At least once a year, we can gaze upon the beauty of the lights and for a second, forget about the world's troubles.
