Never, ever, EVER call Holden Caulfield emo. He's too cool for that. I think those are the phonies he was talking about. The emo people, I mean.

When I was younger, I though Holden Caulfield was so cool, and I imitated him. As real as a lot of the feelings were that I had at the time, part of not changing my life so I could enjoy it was the fact that I simply didn't want to. I was just trying to fit that personality instead. I think a lot (maybe not all) emos fall somewhere along those lines.
Holden had no reason to think acting like this was cool, though. It was a more serious problem, and when he talked to his sister, he tried to snap out of the daze he was living in. Yet even with the desire to change, there was still something physical that prevented him from doing so and which he needed to get help with. There's nothing emo about going to a mental institution.
Most people feel depressed at some point in their lives. In my opinion, anyone who just accepts it (or tries to duplicate it) could be considered emo. Holden Caulfield was not.

Holden Caulfield is schizophrenic. Emo people are bipolar.

If there is one over rated novel in American culture it is "Catcher in the Rye". Holden is a twit.
The fact that he was surrounded by twits and phonies doesn't mean he is someone to admire.
I read the novel in 1957 and didn't like it then. I still don't like it.
