First- run your virus scanner, spyware scanners (Ad Aware, if you have it). If no virus, delete the spyware.

Clean out old and temp files: (These are not the same as Temporary internet files. They are created by programs that you use.) Cookies are very small, no real harm, but you can delete those if you want.

Do a search for dot tmp files:
In xp, START, SEARCH, type (*.tmp; *.old) "all files and folders" field.... one space between the semicolon and *.old. Make SURE you type a period and not a comma.

In Windows 98, START, FIND, Find files and folders.

Delete all the .tmp files it finds. (you will get a warning if there is something the system needs to run, such as det.log...).

As some others suggested, uninstall unused programs.

After that, defrag. Best to do it in Safe mode so nothing will try to write to the drive. Takes less time also. If you use the computer a lot, defrag at least twice a month.

If that doesn't do the trick, formatting will help. Before you do, save all personal files (everything you want to keep, except the programs in Prog Files). If you saved the installation files of your programs (such as any IM programs, etc,.) in a folder, save that to CD. Saves time.

Be sure to get a good virus scanner and firewall. To keep spyware from installing itself on your system, try spywareBlaster

AVG is a good virus scanner. http://www.freegrisoft.com/

Almost forgot... go to Run, type in msconfig, OK and click the Startup tab. If Microsoft Find Fast is checked, uncheck.

There you will see a list of the programs that load when you boot up, and the more there are, the slower it will load. Check here for a list of startup items and what they mean:

Of course you want the virus scanner and firewall to run.

This question is asked millions of times everywhere. The best way to "fix" this would be to reformat your hard drive and install a fresh copy of your operating system.

You must also remember to maintain your computer. This means defragmenting, and cleaning out old files / programs you don't use anymore. I would recommend Diskeeper. You can set it up to defragment your hard drive on a scheduled basis without it bothering you.

Another problem is having too many processes running in the background.

you may want to run an antivirus, and anti spyware program.

if you're computer is taking a long time to startup then try this
start>>run>> type "msconfig.exe" go to the start up tab and uncheck all the programs that you don't want to start up. then restart your computer, and it should run faster.

like many people with the same problem if you have many shortcuts on your desktop try to delete the ones that you don't use. access the programs instead through the all programs menu in the start menu.

Have you scanned for Spyware? If no longer down load, replace and experiment with Spybot and Adaware. How lengthy on account that you ran a diskcleanup? Is your force loose from fragmentation? This ailment can sluggish matters down. Keep a assess on frag stages and in addition at the loose area.

Sounds like either you have to much on it or its infected with a virus and/or spyware/adware. Try removing programs that arent used anymore, updating and running your anti-virus software, and using some kind of anti-spyware program (Ie: Spybot: Search and Destroy). Also it helps to defrag your hard drive about one or two times a month.

You might wanna put in more RAM, which lets your computer operate faster because it gives it more temporary memory. Ask around your Best Buy people for buying and installing.

Re-install windows.

A fresh install always solves slow computers.

Make sure you back up your drive though.
