My brake lights won't shut off so I went to check the brake switch, and sure enough the plastic stopper had broke off from age and
Florida heat. I am a chick and don't know much about cars but I don't have money to go to a mechanic. If I can buy the part myself and do it myself, then I would love to but is it complicated? Please help, thanks :)

Go to the dealer and buy a stop light switch. You already know where it is on the car. there will be a flat large diameter bolt that hold it to the bracket that a tab on the brake pedal should hit OR release activating the stop light. i would bet its a 12 mm flat bolt on a long threaded collar that the white piece of plastic you noticed should protrude from. Take the electrical connector off. be careful there will be a tab you will have to push to release the plug, do not muscle it out. it sounds like the switch RELEASES the white plastic stopper you described allowing the lights to actuate. Good luck

If the parking brake is off you probably have low brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir. Have the brakes checked, on most cars it's time for brakes when the fluid gets low enough to trigger the light. If all that is OK you have another problem with the brakes that needs diagnosing. If the brake pedal feels different, just go to a garage and get them checked before they fail.

All you need is to take it out using simple tools, screw drivers and pliers... a little bit crawling and hassles but you could do it... then bring them to your nearest hardware and ask for its best replacements, the one that would last long. In placing back the replacements is more easier as you have seen and have studied its structures.

By the way, they are located just around the area of the brake pedal and usually from the arms of the brake pedal.

You don't mention what year make or model car you are driving. It's usually not that hard. Provide that info and we might be able to help.
