Firstly if you unpartition the drive, the data in that drive will get lost. To unpartition it, there are two ways:
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management.
Click on Disk Management. The hard disk partitions get displated on the right pane. Right click and on the parititon you want to delete and then click on "Delete Logical Drive".
2. Boot the system from a Win 98 bootable floppy and at teh command prompt, type fdisk. Follow the instructions and delete the logical drive and the paritions.

To partition a drive is serious under taking. Why is the drive partitioned? It's usually for mainly 1 of 3 reasons. The first is dual-boot which is for a computer to have more than 1 operating system on it. The second is you might have an older lap top, which is running a version of windows where the operating system can't handle the capacity of a large hard drive, so it's partitions the drive to smaller chunks. But more recently companies have a small partition where they store programs to repair your computer, and provide information to a technician over the phone. In any case it requires reformatting parts of the drive, and if you make a mistake you can loose everything.

Go into control panel>administrative tools>computer management>then double click on disk management to see what the partitions are for. From here you can format the partitions but to merge them you will need a program like partition magic. If the volume is NTFS one of the partitions is probably the MFT.

More than likely when its partitioned the recovery setup part is on the partitioned drive which means unless you want to lose your resteration as in restore your pc you need to use a windows xp disk to remove it. It will walk you threw the process and it will ask you to partition it or not. Put i wouldnt remove it unless your for sure that the recovery information is not on that partition because you can lose all of your drivers and everything.

I wouldn't unless you need to. I expect that one partition contains the recovery prog for your machine and if you repartition you run the risk of losing that. Why fiddle unless there's a problem?
If you insist, there's a good program called "Partition Magic" that should retain the data.

You haveto format the PC before cancelling the filrs.....!Losing data on a hard drive is the worst nightmare of any computer owner. However, some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

Wipe it with something like Dban (http://dban.sourceforge.net/). Or remove the partition table, preserving the data.
