Teachers are mean because they have s a very stressful job.
Sometimes it works when they're mean. When I was a junior, I cut school every single day. Prior to junior year, I'd cut entire days instead of classes but my math teacher from junior year was VERY strict so I ALWAYS made sure to get to his class because I didn't want to get yelled at.

OUCH!! (Warning a little sarcasm to follow!!) and names have been changed to protect the innocent... and me.
Teachers are mean? Really? Wow? I thought that the teacher's job was to teach a subject, redirect students who behave badly and are disrespectful, and help students become citizens who are responsible in society. This is a job that sometimes requires a little "meaness"but perhaps it's because the students have expectations and the teacher has expectations and the two don't always meet.
For example, David comes into my class and doesn't do his work. I offer to sit near him and help. He doesn't want the attention. I offer for another student in the class to help.. he doesn't want the help. David comes to school because he gets a free breakfast and a free lunch. David comes to school because he is safe there. David comes to school because he has friends here.
My job is to teach David to read and write. HE doesn't want to. He doesn't want to do his assignments. He doesn't want to turn around and stop bothering the cute little girl who sits behind him. If David were getting paid for this, he'd be fired because he doesn't want to work. David gets upset with me because when he doesn't do his work, I take away priviledges. Hence, I am the mean one. However, if you look at other students in the room, who don't have the same situation at home that David does, or they want to learn--- I am not a mean teacher.
I don't think most teachers are mean, we have a job to do, and we have to change the things that prevent us from doing out job, and in turn changing this student could be to his benefit as well.
Maybe if you think a teacher is mean you need to look at both sides of the situation. Most of us love our jobs, and even like our students. We care about them so much that we take a lot of the crap they like to give us, in hopes that they will learn that following directions, completing assingments, and sacrificing socializing, and actually THINKING for themselves instead of depending on others to just give answers, will help students to be productive citizens of our community.

Teaching is a tough job and not always the best of pay. So I'm sure that and the behavior of some students year by year grates at a teachers sanity and outlook. Everyone has their bad days!

not all teachers are mean, for example, my last year science teacher was really cool. she was one of those teachers that you could talk to. but, some teachers may be mean because that's their way of trying to get you to succeed, perhaps, it's just a theory. or maybe that teacher is only mean during class and outside of school is actually a really cool person.

Some teachers are mean because they have tough jobs, you have to admit. I mean if I had to put up with a bunch of kids who don't even try to put an effort, I'd be pissed too. I don't know, but I don't think that all of them are mean on purpose, but hey i don't like them either so yeah.

Most teachers aren't mean, they just have to deal with students that have no manners or respect for themselves or their teachers. There are a few tho that really are mean and it would do you well to behave in their classes.

1st answer We're not different from anybody else, just remember, teachers are human too.
2nd Answer - I teach. (obviously not english) Most kids mistake discipline for meanness. We often want to get as much done as possible sometimes that means correcting the rude behavior you brought in off the street and getting you focused. Call it tough love.

Teachers are people. Lots of People are mean. If you look at society today, you don't see as many kind people rather than 20 years ago. The world needs peace.

I think many teachers out there feel that they can't keep control of their classes unless they are tough on them.
