Why did James Kim the Cnet Editor , who died of exposure stop driving ?

I would like to know what prompted the family to stop in a remote place and not make a U turn to come back

i guess they must have gotton stuck and unable to turn around...that was so sad ...thank god the mother and kids were saved...
