Take a soda can and fill it partly with rocks, about 1/4 filled. Then tape the top shut. Put a few of these around the house and when your dog barks, give the can one quick shake. The noise will startle the dog and she should stop the barking. You will have to keep a few around so that you don't have to hunt for the one can you placed somewhere.
You can also try a spray bottle filled with water and mist her when she barks. Again, keep a few of these around the house.
I personally like the shake can, I think it works more effectively, but see what one works better for you.

Personally I think a shock collar is really useful. If you keep it on the lowest setting, it could help solve your problem. I know several people that have used mild ones, and after the first few times they use them with verbal reinforcement (Lassie, No! or whatever) they will very quickly learn to just listen to the voice, because they know that there is something to back it up. It's like a child; you can tell them no until the cows come home, but if they have never seen the consequences of their actions they will continue to act in the same way. Shock collars on the lowest setting really don't hurt much at all, they more so just startle the animal. (I once accidentally brushed into an electric fence for horses and the voltage on those is much higher than dog shock collars and it really wasn't painful.) You could also try asking your vet or a dog trainer for advice. But whatever you do, every time your dog barks you need to "get after her" for it in whatever manner you choose that is safe for the dog.

ok shock collars, muzzles and a can of rocks wont work trust me...i have 4 border collies even though they are supposed to not bark they do anyway...i have tried every thing and its just in there nature...if you live in an appartment or small house with no room for the dog to run and play thats bad especially for borders because they are so smart and at the same time so A.D.D. it willl help if you can just let them run some and get all that pent up energy out....other than that you can train her to bark on command so that she knows when its ok and any time other than that is not ok...hope i helped!!

I think wags is right- either what he mentioned or removing them to a quiet room. My german shepherd used to bark alot, but every time he did, we said "out" really loud and put him in the laundry. If she's a pup you can expect a bit of whining and barking at first, but don't let her out until she's quiet. She is a smart girl- it won't take her long to figure out that if she wants your attention, she has to be quiet. My dog growls now if he thinks somethings not right- much easier on the ears.
If you are away alot and it's the neighbours who have a problem, a barking collar will probably be the only solution. She'll probably only need it on for a week to get the picture, and you don't need to use the electric ones, they have ones that spray citrus too (which dogs hate).

My advice is to go to the pet store and buy a musle and put it on your dog for 20 minutes or so and ever time say (your dogs name) and say either stop or no barking. and do this a couple times a day. It may seem mean but my dad did that to my dog and now she does no bark at every thing. Have a wonderful holiday and i hope my advice helps!

I have a german shep pup that barked all the time and sometimes still barks at a leaf blowing across the yard. Heres what we did to cure the problem............When he would bark at things he should'nt we would say QUITE! QUITE! QUITE! real loud until he shut-up. the minute he stopped barking we would say GOOD BOY! Barked again....QUITE! Until he understood that when he stopped barking he got rewarded with GOOD BOY.
If he would bark at people in our yard or drive, we would let him bark and say good boy. He is learning what to bark at and what not to bark at. Now he knows when it's ok to bark.
This is not a quick fix but it is a fix. We have used this on all of our dogs that we have ever had and it has worked on all of them. Good luck.......................HC

I believe dogs think they are supposed to be watchmen. Sorry to say, once a dog starts barking at noises they will continue to do so. I've got a dog like this too!

Well you can try a shock collar for everytime your dog barks, but I dont agree with that solution entirely. There are also chemical ways to do this which would calm the dog down and make the dog less attentive to things around it. Give the dog calming medication, that you would be able to pick up from your vet. Another solution is to use a spary bottle full of water and something sour, then spray it in the dogs mouth everytime it acts out of line with its barking.
