relates to the tree? (Example. If you love country music, a cowboy hat.)

A star is the most recognized tree topper, but I think that each person should decorate their own tree according to their personality, and that includes the tree topper. Some people want the religious symbolism that comes with the star, but others choose to just have it be a decoration at a wonderful time of year.

I have a star on my tree because I don't want to take anything away from why we have Christmas, but I am religious and I choose to have my tree that way. It is not wrong to not have a star at all or a different topper.

Hmmm, tough one. I guess it would depend on the theme of the tree. For example, if you're decorating with a cookies and candy theme, you could use a gingerbread house at the top. If it's a religious theme, you could use a small creche instead of a star. If it's a toy theme, a doll dressed as an angel, or blocks spelling "Joy", mebbee.
BTW, I'm still planning a space-age bachelor pad theme tree, with martini glass ornaments and fabric leopard spot garland, and a big rocket in lieu of a star. That's gonna be a wild tree.

If you consider that the tree is a symbol of celebrating Christmas, then the thing on the top should be a symbol of Christmas. So I would suggest an Angel as angels are God's messengers.

I've never had a star on my tree. its always been an angel. I would never put anything but an angel on my tree. the one we have my nana bought years and years ago. she past away 2 years back so having the angel on my tree kind of keeps her here and alive with me each and every Christmas.

We have always had an angel at the top of our tree, until the birth of ur last child, two years ago. She was given a toy by someone very special, a minature pumba (as in pumba and timone) .. pumba takes his place at the top of our tree now, and was infact placed there an hour ago!!

I am with Kia--at least to a point. On the other hand there's no reason I cannot somehow affix a bottle of Guiness toward the top, and set the star on top of it!

We have a Santa hat on top of ours this year. Typically it is a Mickey Mouse dressed as santa that lights up, but this year we have a new kitten and he wouldn't let it alone.
