Try a surface spray you can spray on and leave. That will attract them and will kill them when they run over it. Also you can get cockroach baits which work in pretty much the same way.

Cockroaches are scavengers. They eat the same thing you do. Take the trash out. Sweep the floor. Take EVERYTHING out of your kitchen cabinets and you'll likely find something you completely forgot about that got spilled. That can feed a lot of cockroaches for a very long time. One time somebody lost a piece of toast when it popped out and mysteriously disappeared. I didn't know anything about it, but we had roaches for months before I found the piece of toast behind the radiator.
I moved here nearly half a century ago when I was nine. We had roaches galore. These days I keep all types of food in the refrigerator, in jars with screw-on tops, or in plastic bags with wire-reinforced ties on them. There is nothing here that a roach can get at to eat and I haven't seen one in years. I don't use poison.
Don't feed them and they'll go away. If your neighbors are slobs, don't worry. The roaches will go live with them.
Everything I said about roaches also applies to rats.

If you have a heavy infestation, the best way to go would be to hire an exterminator.
Otherwise, check your home improvement store for products such as sprays or "bombs." I have heard that a brand called Bengal, I believe, is very good.
If you have small children and/or pets, be sure to follow instructions carefully for all products, with careful attention to directions involving kids or pets.
Good luck. I know you want to rid your home of those pesky critters before you get all settled in.

Boric Acid works great. It comes in a box and looks kind of like soap powder. Walmart and some of your local grocery stores has it. Spread it all around the basement and in the cabinets. Especially dark areas. Be careful around basement if you have pets. But Boric acid works great. Just leave it there for as long as you wish.

Bug bombs in every room, closets, drawers and cabinets open. Cover clothing and dinner ware or plan on washing them all before using them. Then to keep them out I use bottle caps (not soda caps) by filling these with boric acid and a pinch of sugar and hide these under sinks, behind washer, dryer and places that attract roaches. BE SURE THEY ARE NOT WITHIN REACH OF CHILDREN OR ANIMALS.
