No, it's not true. It is a large bird, probably a crane. The crew borrowed several large birds from a nearby zoo to make the forest set look more alive and natural. The crane stretches out its wings in the middle back of the set just as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Lion start to skip down the YBR singing "We're Off to see the Wizard" after the "beehive" run-in with the Wicked Witch of the West.
There are lots of rumors and urban legends surrounding the movie. This one is the most wide-spread, probably followed next by the idea that the munchkins were "little drunks." That idea was spread after Judy Garland cracked the joke in an interview. A few of them might have had a little temper, but they weren't stumbling through the studio.

It is my absolute favorite movie so I've seen it countless times and I've looked and never seen any such thing. I have seen a crane in the background at the part everyone talks about though. When Dorothy and Scarecrow find the Tin Man and the Wicked Witch appears on the roof of the hut, look after she disappears and the three start down the road and you might be able to see it.

Several exotic birds are seen wandering around near the Tin Man's cottage at the start of his first scene, including a toucan, a peacock, and a crane. At the close of the scene, as the film's characters dance out of frame, the crane is visible in the trees in the background, and it chooses that moment to stretch and flap its wings. Its distance from the camera and its confusing, swinging silhouette had been the source of a decades-long rumor that a Munchkin actor hanged himself on the set. The rumor was fueled by the relatively low resolution of TV and videotape copies of the film. The re-release of the full-screen film in the 1990s, along with higher-definition versions on DVDs, have debunked that urban legend.

that was a rumor that it was a munchkin who hung himself because his girlfriend broke up with him. the rumor is false. it looks to be a man climbing a tree, swinging, falling down from hanging, then climbing back up and re-hanging himself. if you watch the scene, and don't pay attention to the "hanging munchkin" you'll notice, if i remember correctly, i think it was a big bird or a duck or geese, or something like that, and it flaps it's wings. the "hanging muchkin" is actually the tip of the birds wings as he flaps his wings around.
the scene is right after they meet the tin man and he does his dance, then they walk away. in the background is the house where the scarecrow and dorothy had just before seen the witch. you're in the right part of the movie, it's just a little bit afterwards.

I have seen the body swinging back in forth in the movie. It is at some point in the forest. It isn't like in front of the screen or anything it is in the way back between two trees. It looks as though the body is swinging behind a screen. My two cousins pointed it out to me at a family reunion when I was younger and I always notice it now. My cousins said it was the director or something, but I don't know how accurate that information is.
You can't look at the main characters you have to watch the forest, it is right behind them, but between the trees in the background. When you get a chance, watch it without any distractions and look for yourself!

Yes, it is true. But it is not a real body. When The Wizard of Oz was in production, there was another movie that was in production at the same time and they were using the same set, but they forgot to take down the body before they shot the movie. That was only in the VHS movies, don't try to look for it on DVD because they deleted it now.

I've heard the same thing. It happens to be one of my favorites, so I have looked and looked in this movie for that very thing - never saw it. There is also a story out there about the scarecrow having a gun in his hand. Watched the entire movie one time just staring at the scarecrows hand, and I never saw it. I'll be paying attention to the answers you get, who knows, maybe I missed something.

no its just a trick of the shadows. the myth probable came up because that movie had a lot of bad luck during the filming. they went through three directors. and if you pay attention you notice that Dorthy's hair goes from short to long a couple of times during the movie.

no all that stuff is fake, when they shot the scene when people say you can see some one hanging, it is a bird. they wanted to make the land of oz look exotic so they had some big birds of paradise on the set, the bird flaps its wings and thats where people say its a munchkin hanging,
