Is that a serious question!!!! In case it is, animals make it, they grow it on the outside of themselves. It's generally called skin whilst they are still alive. In case you are wondering yes you can make leather out of human skin, the Nazi's did it during WW2. Apparently it looks similar to pig skin.
After the animal is skinned the skin goes through a process called tanning which preserves it. There are several different methods of doing this, then it gets treated differently depending on what finished result is required. It's actually really interesting the different processes it goes through, but probably a bit too complicated to explain.
