Space Station, any facility that enables humans to live in space for long periods of time. Space stations are used as laboratories where scientific and engineering experiments are conducted and as servicing centers where spacecraft can be repaired, upgraded, or even constructed. Space stations are expected to one day act as spaceports where spacecraft can pick up and deliver people, cargo, and fuel on the way to or returning from distant destinations, such as Mars.

The main purpose of the ISS will be to carry out various aspects of scientific research under microgravity. This may include the manufacture of materials which cannot be created n Earth.
The research will include medical studies to continue to work on the effects of the human body under these conditions, as part of the research needed to prepare us for the flights to Mars and back.
However, contrary to some statements, it will not be used as a staging post for flights to the Moon or Mars. For one reason the fuel would have to be carried up to the ISS first, which would require additional flights, when it would be far more straightforward to fly directly from Earth.

Not only is it a laboratory for conducting experiments, which we need the answers too, but it is a platform to further go to the moon, for the establishment of the 1st moon base, and eventual mining of the moon for ores etc. Man is currently at the beginning of noticing how "not living in harmony with nature" has caused negative effects to begin to show ie (global warming) and knows one day this planet will be uninhabitable
