It is a ghost ship doomed to sail forever. If it is spotted by sailors, then it is a sign of imminent danger.

Welll. I watched Pirates of The Carribean 2 last night and it seems to me that the flying dutchman is a ship formed of dead people that have sentances to work as the crew ( usually work as a crew for 100 years!). The reason why they work is because they can be renewed of their sins and not go to hell. I have no clue why he is dutch though.. Because why would the DUTCH man be in the CARRIBEAN? odd. But thats just my explanation!

The Flying Dutchman was the name of a train. It was named that by the hobos. It was one of the fastest trains ever built. If I remember right it could do over 100 MPH. It was also called the Wabash Cannonball. There's a ghost ship called The Flying Dutchman.

I don't like the 3 page essays either! I get bored easily. The only Flying Dutchman I know is actually not a person, it is a "ghost" ship. You can probably google it.

LOL hello, wiki...
According to folklore, the Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that can never go home, but is doomed to sail "the seven seas" forever. The Flying Dutchman is usually spotted from afar, sometimes glowing with ghostly light. If she is hailed by another ship, her crew will often try to send messages to land, to people long since dead. The sight of this phantom ship is reckoned by seafarers to be a portent of doom.
