Google for a good recipe for papier mache. Blow up a balloon until it is approx the right size for the head and tape it to a tube (the neck) that you have made by taping a rectangle of kraft paper together.

Cover this all with a layer of paper mache, adding the necessary lumps for the nostrils and eyebrows.

Cut long ears from kraft paper and tape them to the papier mache. Paint the whole thing grey with black eyes, a white muzzle and the inside of the ears pink.

Buy a cheap $5 black feather boa at Hobby Lobby and glue it down the back of the neck with about 6 inches dangling over the eyes for the mane.

AFter it is dry, try it on the middle schooler. Cut slits in the neck at his/her eye level and if necessary, shape the bottom of the neck so it fits over the shoulders.

Cut another series of inconspicuous slits around just below chin level, including the back, for ventilation.

Depending on how lively the role is going to be, consider stapling two elastic straps on each side of the neck, to go under the child's armpits and help hold the head on.
