I don't personally like it, but I don't say it's garbage. If it has meaning and significance for you, then crank it up.

Part of the reason you actually stated yourself: "something they don't understand", being used in a literal term.
Some of it is really hard to understand which is why some people are repelled from it being that the musicians can't make music that is at least understandable.
Another reason behind a common dislike in hip-hop is the history of the genre in terms of what it/they (the musicians who make the music) promotes. You name it there's been a hip-hop song made for it, including the bad things that I'd get a violation for listing on here.
The final reason is probably the little or no use of real instruments. All that hip-hop artists do really is get a DJ, mix up the tracks and effects and lay their vocal parts over the pre-recorded stuff. If they showed that they were capable of making good music themselves they'd get a lot more respect from everyone.

I think people look at hip hop music as being garbage because there are "artists" out that give the music a bad rep.
Like someone previously stated, the degrading women line is getting worn out. It's obvious. Ranting and raving about how "horrible" hip hop music is..is getting played out. Yes, PLAYED OUT. There will always be a guy that calls a woman a b-tch or whatever out name in the book. So what makes them wrong when people use the words in everyday conversation. You may not know it, but when you hear it on a song, people want to turn on the sirens *sarcastic statement* and all eyes are looking down upon hip hop. Not every hip hop artist talks negatively about everything. You have the fake thugs, the fake drug dealers, the insulting lyrics, but you also have those songs that uplift women, talk about real things that happen to normal people. Hip Hop itself is not garbage, there are just trashy people that come in and claim themselves to be hip hop artists that ruins it for everyone else.

I am a woman and I am one of the biggest fans of Rap music. To say that rap music degrades women is such an overused statement. Rap music as a whole is not violent or degrading, but a few rappers do fit the bill. There are rap songs that do contain lyrics that say things about women that may be offensive. At the same time there are rappers that aim to uplift, encourage, and inspire their listeners. You must remember that the songs about "bitches and hoes" are about the type of women that they deal with on a daily basis. GROUPIES! Women who don't respect themselves and don't give a damn about anyone else. These women are degrading themselves. The rappers are just holding a mirror in their faces. The thing is, the women don't care so why should you?
If anything rappers should be offended for being stereotyped as a violent and misogynistic lyricist. If you don't listen to the music, don't even voice your opinion because you don't have anything to back it up with.

Because the people who listen to it can't spell, and they have terrible grammar. If you want people to listen to you, you must at least learn the basic skill of being able to run your sentences through a spell-checker. Grammar is a bit tougher, but stay in school and start learning. Either that, or memorize "Do you want fries with that", as that is the level of job you'll be qualified for. But, it is a free country, if you want to listen to garbage, go right ahead. But, the old computer saying is still true: "Garbage in, Garbage out" (GIGO). Listen to garbage, and you'll think it is ok to talk and think garbage (it is NOT ok). Let's see, you made at least five errors in three sentences. Garbage.

the people who say its garbage need to realize that at least 15 hip hop albums a year go double platinum and no other form of music can make that statement.

The proverbial "theys" have been around since the beginning of time. "They" will continue to have issues with anything they don't create themselves. Take the NBA Commissioner for example - he is an aging, unattractive, frump of a man. He sets the rules for a bunch of sexy, wealthy, athletic, healthy, young men at the prime of their lives. He is a "they" hell bent on taking away the only thing he can . . .their professional freedom. He wants players to dress like him, be free of emotion . . . or any whim he has for that day. It is all about control - don't think about it too much.

i believe that rap is a form of poetry and should be respected. I agree with you as you said we dont go around saying things like rock sucks i like some rock but cant stand country but i dont go around stating it for no reason at all. But i think people hate rap because they only hear the new stuff and dont take time out to listen to the old rappers like 2pac or bone thugs and harmony.

Because rap does suck. And so does metal. Rap is a degenerate minstrel show. What happened to REAL black music? Oh yeah and rock & country both have black roots too so HA!
