Here is what i would do:
1) Take a career assessment test: If these tests are taken honestly, your personality, likes, dis-likes and talent will help you determine a set of careers that could be right for you. Many schools have access to these type of career tools. If not, they can usually recommend one.
2) Complete a set of informational interviews: Find two or three careers that may interest you and find people in that industry. When you find them, ask if you can shadow them for a day. Ask them questions about what they like most and like least about their jobs. Ask why they choose their career and what drove them to make their decision.
Don't get caught up with their answers. Rather, listen for what they discovered about themselves that helped them with their decisions. In your example, if you know someone who is a teacher who hates his/her career, it is more important to understand why they hate their current position and what they discovered about themselves that makes them dislike it.
3) Assess yourself: Take an inventory of the things about yourself: Your talents, your interests, your passions. It is important to understand what drives you. Is it money, reputation, helping the world, etc. After you write down your values, you'll be able to determine your purpose and the careers that will help you with your purpose.
4) Research: Read a book called, "Discover Your Strengths"
http://www.amazon.com/discover-your-stre...
Also read, "What Color Is Your Parachute?"
http://www.amazon.com/what-color-your-pa...
These books will help you assess yourself and help you find the appropriate career opportunity.

first of all i would reccomend not taking a break.. since you have so many GE courses that you must take its best to go straight from high school with stuff like math fresh in your mind. also i would reccomend goign into a university "undeclared" many schools will let you do this and it is a good idea because you can take some GE classes and get a feel for what interests you the most. bottom line, dont pursue a job bc you will make a lot of money, if you love what you do u will excel in it and the money will come!

School is the adventure that will help you decide what you want to do. Just go you'll figure it out. Research Organizations you think you might like to work for and their Careers. Social worker, Urban developers and case managers are some Job titles that help poor people but if you narrow it down to how you'd like to help poor people you' ll figure it out. You can also work for the city, state, and federal government. Don't take a break, its better to go while it's fresh on your mind. Research, research, research... but take a deep breath and relax. Let your father know your going (what's best for you won't always be what parents have in mind for their children).maybe that will releave some of the pressure. College is kind of like walking at first we're not that good at it but soon it becomes second nature and then you'll start to explore. While your in school you'll have time to choose what you love.

Take a year off. See stuff. I didn't do it after high school (Dad pressured me too) and I regret it to this day. There's always time for college.

Why not get into the social work field? There are universities that offer Social Work-type majors.
