Because teenagers generally don't know who they are. High school is a place of acceptance. If they're in a high school where everyone is "gangsta" then they want to be just like everyone else. Generation after generation produce teens that want to cause more trouble. The media does become more influential as time goes by. It's probably just a phase that some teens are going through. They'll get over it once they figure out who they are and learn what they value the most out of life.

Wow! I didn't realize I felt so strongly about this!
Is it wrong to want to be different than you are? I think we all go through this in some way. I want to be thin, blonde, and blue eyed. I want to be a great ballerina. I want to be a singer. I want to not only fit in, but stand out. I wish I had been born about 5 years sooner because I wish I had experienced that part of our history.
I think the sad thing is when we don't like ourselves. It's okay to dream, to wonder, to contemplate 'what ifs.'

but on a more serious note... kids what to be what they perceive as "black". That is whats being sold to them by the media (unfortunately) Cause like other races, there are diofferent type of Black people. Even "black and nerdy" guys (no joke)

Maybe in ;your area of the country black people get special perks and the youngsters you are hearing want freebies just because its possible.

They dont necessarily want to be black. its more they want to be gangster, for them this is cool. "Gangsta" is associated with black, b/c this style originated in black "ghetto"'s. Teenagers often want to be s/t they're not, part of finding identity. Totally normal.
