or

It is "Do you mind if I hold the baby?"
Or
"Would you mind if I held the baby?"

For all intents and purposes, we misuse the language a lot. Linguistically speaking, both of your sentences are correct.
Grammatically, the second is wrong.

"Would you mind if I held the baby?" does not refer to past tense. It is a conditional structure. Unreal conditionals are often used because they sound more polite. For example:

Can you help me?/Could you help me?
Will you mind if I join you?/Would you mind if I joined you?

Both are correct

Would you mind if I hold the baby?
You are asking permission to do something (hold).

Would you mind (that) I (have)held the baby?
You are telling of a action that has been completed (held) in the past.

The correct expression i9s to "hold" the baby. Held in true English is past tense.

hold- held is past tense- both are used commonly though

im pretty sure you would say hold being that held is past tense..
