Farmers need to keep track of each cow. When they are born a diagram is drawn of their particular markings, and they are given a name that follows a pattern on their mother and father( such as Caroline has a Carrie and a Carol and a Chris and etc)and they get a number and the ear tag is permanently affixed for all future reference.

when your milking 2500 head of Holstein twice a day, which is a 24 hour non stop milking job, you need to keep track of who is who and # tags or ear tags are a must. More so when your testing your cows for fat content as well as disease. You print out a computer print out of all you cows and when that cow comes in to be milked, you need to I.D. her so you can get a sample of her milk and meter the amount of what she's putting out. Milk is weighed in pounds until it gets to the supermarket then it becomes half pints, pints, half gal, gallons and so on.
