This is a total nerd answer, but i always loved Joe Madureira when I used to read comic books. He illutrated Uncanny X-Men for a time and had a cartoony, manga influenced style that I thought was great.

My favorite artist is Michelangelo. Why? Just take a look at what he can do with a piece of marble. Incredible. The ceiling of The Sistine Chapel is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. It's fascinating. Too bad I've never seen it in real life.

My favorite contemporary artist is Dana Levin. She is a Classical Realism, Academic Painting, and Naturalist oil painter. http://www.danalevin.com/gallery.html Dana Levin is a prominent Alumni of the Florence Academy of Art and the Art Instituted of Chicago. Dana's art follows the tradition of the Boston School Masters such as John Singer Sargent, Benson, Tarbell, and Paxton. Ms. Levin founded The New School of Classical Art, the only Classical Realism and Academic painting Atelier in Rhode Island. She upholds the tradition of craftsmanship in drawing in the face of modern art's popularity. Her work is leading to a resurgence of interest in traditional drawing and painting, which has definitive standards by which to judge its quality.

Giacometti. Art is a process of seeing and creating. He never rested on a pretty picture ... was continually revisiting his figures, etc.
