I have just set up a wireless network at my place. I have taken the following measures to ensure the security:-
- Disabling SSID broadcast.
- MAC Identification.
- WEP key security.
I just checked the log and I am receiving continious Pings of Death. Though the router is dropping the packets but still someone is trying to do something bad to my computer and he knows the IP address of the machine. What should I do?

setting up a software firewall behind a router which has a built in firewall offers no real advantages, if anything the combination of two firewalls will just start to cause connectivity problems for you.

alot of people have problems purely from having the router's firewall enabled because it can block or limit access to the internet for some programs so installing a second firewall will do you very little favours.

the pings aren't necessarily coming from inside the network itself, or ouside the wireless network but within your physical area - in fact i'd say there's slim to no chance that they are so none of the above security applies to this.

if anything, they're coming from the internet side unless they do have an internal 'network' type ip address such as 192.168.X.X.

you should either just ignore them since they're not actually doing any harm, or leave your router unplugged for a day to try and force your isp to reissue you another ip address. you could try this also for renewing your ip manually:
start > run > ipconfig /release
start > run > ipconfig /flushdns
start > run > ipconfig /renew

incidentally, what's the worst that could happen? the router is dismissing the packets, plus they don't have your computer's ip address they only have the router's ip address and it's ignoring them.

EDIT:
if the ip address is changing, it's not necessarily the same person/computer - as i stated above, if it's not affecting the network in any way just ignore it and let the router do it's job.

Well, you have someone hunting for you, for sure. He'll keep pinging until he stumbles over you. Call your router manufacturer, or go to their website, and find out how to change your channel.

I just had this happen to me, someone was wardriving near me and had my modem on for 13 hours. They couldn't get to the computer, but what they wanted was the bandwidth from my broadband, and they got that until I got it stopped. I now have a new WEP key and password, but still I'll watch it closely and change the channel as often as I think necessary.

Get on this now, and put a stop to it. Good luck!

the respond above is authentic and extremely thorough, I in simple terms needed to indicate out. no it is easy to ever write United State and that they do it thrice, that isn't any typo. We write the date might 31, 2011 The English is terrible. a lot of run on sentences that dont have appropriate punctuation. Many could be 2 sentences incredibly of one. those human beings at the instant are not in the U. S., and that i doubt that English is their familiar language. then back, Consolidated Edison could have professional secretaries. Dont open direct mail digital mail. Its finished of scams. Unemployment is extreme right here, they dont could recruit human beings from different countries.
