Darwin did not specifically address the question of how life began. His book, The Origin of the Species, was mainly a description of natural selection, which is the major process by which living organisms adapt and evolve. During Darwin's time, nearly nothing was known about the molecular basis of life or the mode of heredity (DNA), so it was not really possible at the time to comment on life's origins. However, contemporary evolutionary biologists have developed theories about the origins of life - for instance Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene, among many others.

Darwin had no idea.
Dr Zoo above is sadly mistaken, and should not put about flaky philosophy as if it were fact.
Many people do not agree that life has been around for hundreds of millions of years. Most *scientific* methods for estimating the age indicate the earth is young. This is confirmed by the Biblical account.
There is no evidence to support the assertion that the diversity of life began with little variation. Life appears in the fossil record with full complexity.
There is no 'simple' life in the fossil record. Even the 'simplest' bacteria is hugely complex, and is clear evidence of intelligent design - by an intelligence far greater than our own!
The first bacterium to be sequenced had 1,830,137 base pairs coding for an estimated 1,743 coding regions (‘genes’).
I don't think anyone would claim to be remotely close to understanding this 'simple' life form.
Dr Zoo clearly does not have an earned doctorate :)

I don't think darwin came up with the start of life. He came up with evolution by natural selection.

Darwin did not know how life started. All he knew from his observation and study that:
1. Life has been around for hundred of millions of years as oppose to religous idea that life has only been around for 10,000 years. But base on fossil evidences, life has been around indeed for hundred of millions of years. The oldest life form such as ancient bacteria is about 3.5 billion years ago.
2. The diversity of life started from little variety of organisms to many more complex organism (Evolution). And that the key for life diversification is by Natural Selection. Religious people think this idea oppose to their view that life created by God not by nature.
As we look at fossil records we can see life began as simple but eventually become more complex. And that natural selection indeed is a major mechanism to evolution (diversification of organisms). Many scientists such as geneticists, paleontologists, biologists etc... agreed with this theory base on their many experiments and studies.

darwin was employed as a naturalist to gather information to support the churches statement of the devine creation, but instead found evidence of suggestion of descent and diversity dur to adaption. he found that the earth was very old due to fossils that he found showing progressive change ( bit like jurassic park) he then stared to compare other species that he had seen on his journey and found simalarities with the variations of the environment. and it was only because alfred wallace found the same findings and was going to publish that was why he published along with him

I think his theory started from bacteria which have one cell and then developed more and more until reached to human.
this theory as I think is not true
because, this is not occur after the time which he mentioned.
i.e. we didn't see any cell now development alone to reached to another organism.
there is not bacteria converted for ex. to dog.
God " Allah " bless u.

it never started, it developed from cells, very very slowly and progressively over a long long time
