I do math differently. Think of money. 25% of $1.00 is .25. 25% $100.00 is $25.00 or 1/4 of the 100.... so you know 25% is the same as 1/4
$300 would be like 3/4 of what ever the answer is... therefor $400 is the answer.
They say I do more math than I need to figure out the answer, but my way gets me to the same place and makes more sense to me than all of the formulas. I don't see them at all.

the item is originally 400 bucks...400 less 25% = 1/4
400 - 1/4...1/4 of 400 = 100
therefore 400 - 25% (1/4) 100 = 300

$300=75%
so divide 300 by 75 to get 1%
300/75= 4
to get the original price you times this by 100
4 * 100 = $400

Well looking at the answer you can tell its 400 dollars was the original value since 400 x 0.25 = 100||| 400-100= 300.

Well, if the item costs 300 *after* the discount that must mean that something had 25 percent of itself subtracted from it to get there....so we would say something (x) minus 25 percent of that something equals 300....so an equation would be:
x - .25 x = 300
now just solve for x!

Yes, I'll explain
In any of these percentage problems, ALWAYS, ALWAYS let the original quantity at each stage of the sum represent 100 %.
In this case, the original quantity is the price before the discount.
So the $300 price must be 75% of the original..... (100- 25)% = 75%
Let this unknown original price be P
P = $300 x 100/75
P = 300 x 4/3
=400
Original price before the discount = $400
Maths is what you think it is. I think there is a good chance it is one of your future good subjects

Let x = original price.
300 = (1-.25)x = .75x
x = 300/.75 = $400
[+Note that when I posted this answer, Rosie Recipe's answer above was simply "Yes, I'll explain"]

to find your answer you would do $300=.75x
then you would divide $300/.75.
Your answer would then be $400
