I'm thinking about buying a second hand ipod mini in a rather fetching pink, but im paranoid.....the ipod mini is no longer on the apple website? Does this mean they've stopped making them....that can't be a good thing? Also, I know nothing about ipods...are they crap? I only want an mp3 player that holds a decent amount of tracks...which it does but not sure about the fact that apple seems to have disowned it? HELP!!

They discontinued making the iPod minis and replaced them with iPod nanos. I have had an iPod mini for over a year and it is still working well. If you want a cheaper iPod and don't care that its a little older and doesn't have a color screen or store pictures an iPod mini is a good purchase. iPod Nanos are smaller, and other than having a color screen and storing pictures there's not a lot of difference. Also iPod Nanos get scratched more easily and are more expensive because they are newer.

IPod's are not crap! why do you think they have the dominant market share for MP3 players. They control 78% of the MP3 player market. It's true that the iPod mini is no longer available- They replaced it with the nano- the nano is the same thing pretty much- it's just a re-branded version of the mini. I would advise against buying a used mini however- if there's something wrong with it- you have no warranty to get it fixed. The basic rule of thumb for figuring out how many songs an MP3 player can hold is that one song is approximately 4MB (there are 1000MB in 1GB). Ipod nanos hold a couple thousand songs.

Apple has this tendancy to stop making products of theirs as soon as a newer version comes out regardless of how great the former product was. For instance I got an iBook G4 when they were brand new a few years back, as soon as they came out with the newer iBook's they stopped selling the original iBook G4 that I have and started selling the new version exclusivley so the only way to get the iBook G4 original that I have is second hand. Its the same thing with iPod's, Apple currently only sells three types of iPod's right now, the colored iPod Nano, a variation on the iPod shuffle thats reeeeally small, and the iPod video, you can get each of them with different amounts of storage room but these are all Apple sells officially, they do this to make more money but it ***** over us consumers. The iPod mini original is a great product, I still use mine and highly reccomend it, also because its waaay cheaper than the new ipods.

just my two cents.

i have found my ipod mini to be fairly reliable. it shouldnt really matter that apple have 'disowned it', once you have the ipod you dont really need apple anymore. its compatible with most of the products that are around for the ipod.
ipods are renowned for having crap battery life, but in Maplin electronics you can get a new battery for £20, which are relatively easy to fit youself.
the first generation mins hold around 1000 songs, the 2nd gen around 1500 (i think). i find that 1000 is plenty for me, and when i run out of space, i simply switch some of the songs around.
hope this helps!

Ipod minis are very good ipods. although they dont have the luxury of a color screen or super slick look they are still very good.
and by the way there not huge im 15 and the palm of my hand is longer (without fingers )
you can get a new, used , of refurbished pink ipod on ebay for very low prices.
i got my ipod mini off of ebay a couple of months ago and it is awesome its silver and is a 6gb it holds 1500 songs.

Ipods are popular, but VERY Fragile. You should get another MP3 from "Creative". Go to Creative.com and browse, there cheaper(w/ better quality) and more durable
