The keel is the bottom part of the boat, nearest the seabed. In a yacht (i.e. a keel boat) the keel has to be heavy to balance all that heavy mast & sails, so under the boat there is a fixed keel like a fin, usually made of lead. You can also have a swinging, or lifting keel, but let's not get technical!

Well, when one says that a boat or a ship has a keel, it means that it has a backbone. In essence, no vessel regardless of size can be built without a keel. This is where a ship or boat is begun. It is the lowest lying structure and frame on any craft.

the keel is the part of the boat laid out first--wooden boats have a keel timber, from which the ribs are built.
a keel is also the counter balance to the weight of the mast under full sail ---lead weight or the equivalent set below the hull--displaces water and keeps the sailboat upright.
look up ship/boat building and builders on line--there should be pix.

The keel is the great fin form shape on the backside of the hull.the keel is ether made out of or crammed with ballast weight and that's this weight that retains the boat upright.
