Which OS are you using? XP Home or XP Pro. You could have something running in the background that is preventing it from installing the updates. Try doing it manually and see if you can download them. Try cleaning up your disk and make sure that you have no viruses or spy ware on it. You can also set your update to notify you and let you decide if you want to update with that particular update. This way you can do one at a time and see if you can get them to go in. You may also need to disable whatever virus or spy ware programs you are running before the updates can go in. Mine asks me if I want them or not before it will let them install.

Normally there should be no problem in installing windows update's, the only time you might have a problem is if you are using a copy of windows and its not a genuine copy, then you will receive the messages saying unable to install windows security updates successfully, and anything else that they might download such as media player 11 or Internet Explorer 7 and other products, because your version of window's is checked for authentication. only you know if your copy is genuine or not ?.

If you are talking about the Microsoft patches that come out every second Tuesday of each month, they will not install if you don't have a valid registration key for your Windows platform.

I am sure you are not talking about Windows Defender, because you would not be able to download or install this program unless you have a valid key.

If you platform is valid and both the patches or the updates for antispyware will not download, contact suport@microsoft.com

It is very likely you have a virus in your pc and you don't know about. Make sure you have a good internet security suite. You can download and try the Norton trial version just to doublecheck there is no virus on your pc.
The other reason is Macromedia Flash Player. Go to Program Files and try to delete it from there and then reinstall the latest version from the publisher website.
