should i ask for just alum or something else when i go into walmart?

Ask for what you want. But I'd be careful asking for help in Wal-Mart... most associates don't know where things in the store are unless they work in that department. You're going to be asking some kid who doesn't know what alum is, much less where it might be in the store. Be prepared to tell them what it is and what it is used for so that they can point you in the right direction.
