You are much better off destroying it. Someone that knows what they are doing can pull your personal information off of the memory. It saves more stuff than the average person thinks.
Don't take my word for it. Just do a search on the web, and you'lll see what i'm talking about.

You can try a pawn shop but don't expect to get much for them. Most people sell them on eBay. I know a lot of cell phone shops now take old cell phones but donate them to a program that provides them to battered women's shelters. Perhaps you should consider using it to help someone less fortunate when you replace your old phone with the latest and greatest.

Very few people are going to buy a used cell phone. They are usually given to charity and given out for emergency use. 911 will still work without service.
