A cough will usually stop by itself. It needs to run its course. As long as you don't develop a lung infection then you're going to need to be patient. Most over the counter medication do absolutely nothing. Take a little paracetamol before going to bed for comfort if you wish. You can also do some inhalations with mixed herbs (yes, the ones in the kitchen cupboard!). Drink plenty of water to help flush away the virus. One thing that works well for me is a little lemon and honey in hot water. It soothes the throat and gives temporary relief. Good luck.

I had a cough on October which wouldn't go away. It had more than a month. I went to the doctor. I got some chest x-rays which came out OK. But i did have wheezing. The doctor prescribed me singulair and a albuterol inhaler and that stoped the coughing.

If your cough has only recently come on, say after cold/flu, then I recommend Meltus cough syrup. Take it as directed, last thing at night - but don't swallow it quickly. Let it slip down your throat without swallowing for as long as you can (without choking! haha) and it will stick there better. Don't have anything else to eat/drink and get to bed asap to sleep on it.
If your cough is down to smoking, quit the fags.
If it's asthmatic, I recommend breathing exercises - but you'd probably need someone qualified to teach them correctly.

This year as a preventative I put 6 drops of tea tree oil in a shot glass of water and drank it...didn't get sick this year.... A few drops of tea tree in a simmering pot of water helps disinfect the entire house. I have used 1 tablespoon of bleach in my dishwater to help disinfect dishes then use dish rag and wiped off all the things we touch daily....TV remote, light switches, door knobs and the like. Keeping up with your rest and taking herbal supplements can also keep your immune system up. A homepath practioner can guide you to the right homepath pill for your symptoms also. Acidopholis will help maintain good bowel functions which will also help you get over virus and keep you healthy.

A cough medication from the chemist should help, but if it is still bad after 1 week a doctor should be consulted...;
