check the closed sensors on the doors and tailgate. They are usually little plastic pegs that are spring loaded and push in when they're closed. One of them probably isn't making contact. To get around it you can check which fuse it is in your owners manual or at the dealer and pull that fuse till you find out what the problem is.

Common fault on the Taurus - I've replaced several. Most likely culprit is the door ajar switch on the drivers side front door (the aforementioned little plastic peg).

All of the switches on the door jams are normally open push button switches. to test the switches, unscrew the door jam switches, disconnect the wires but put tape on the wires to remind you witch wire goes were. with the two wires put the bare ends together(try this for all door switches) and see if the chime and light goes out if it dose, you need a new switch,if it doesn't you have an electrical problem. To re-connect the switches solder the wires back to their correct places

The switch should be adjustable. But it might just be worn out. Call a local salvage yard, and ask the purchase price on both switches. Also call the dealer to find out if the switches are still available through them.
Good luck.

examine all the sensors and wiring for the secure practices equipment. I had this undertaking on a 1998 Taurus, and it ended up being a foul connection interior the drivers door to the secure practices keypad.
