Give her an iMemoryBook to write her baby journal in. You just get her started on her iMemoryBook for Christmas, she can add all her photos and memories this year. And then tell her that you will pay for the first published hardbound baby book in a few months. Baby Memory books are something every mom needs.

Give her the thing a new mom will most appreciate and need:babysit for her so she can catch up on sleep and take care of herself!
Or you could get her things to make her feel good about herself like a massage gift certificate or some bath and body stuff!

I had a baby 4 moths ago and the best gift was for my mom to bring me and my baby to a restaurant. I think is to bring your friend out is a good gift.

If they don't have it already:
http://www.babybjorn.com/TemplatesWeb/ProductDetails.asp?itemid=3265
The baby Bjorn infant carrier with the straps in Dad's size (if he's a big man, get the XL). What she needs most is for it to be convenient for the baby's father to bond. I carried our son for the first 9 months; he carried him for the next two years most of the time.
Help, generally. New Moms need to deal with adults most of all. Doing dishes, laundry, vacuuming, helping shop . . . all those things are so hard to do just after you give birth because you're still bleeding out from it, everything is sore, your abdomen and internal organs just move wrong, and you're getting no sleep.
Those tiny daily task we take for granted are very hard to do in the first two weeks. Also, offer to do her last-minute Christmas shopping for her. Just give her the chance to cocoon with baby, and it will make a huge difference.

Time!! Take baby out for a walk, or babysit for an hour so she can have a long hot bath! You could make 'time-gift' certificates and say that she can redeem one a day or one a week etc!

Go to her house every day and fix her dinner and clean up the kitchen. Take out the trash. Do her laundry and what ever you can do for her. Make sure she takes a nap in the afternoon when the baby is asleep.

Try a gift card to her favorite boutique or spa. It doesn't always have to be the baby that gets pampered, he/or she, will have thier whole life to be spoiled. Just keep in mind that she will be busy try to get he rsomething that will make her life easier with all the comotion around the new baby.

If she's nursing, you could get her a nice, pretty poncho. I loved these because they look so much nicer then draping a baby blanket over my shoulder, plus the baby couldn't yank them off. And its' still something fasionable and for her, not just the baby. (Plus, you don't have to worry about guessing her size). Make sure you can't see through it , and that its in material that won't be terribly hard to clean.
Some Examples:

If you want to give her something to make her laugh, I have some things at my shop that would work:

DIAPERS!!
I was always so grateful for that as a new mom, especially since babies go through so many!
IF you want, wrap up a 32 count in a blanket, to make it a multiple gift.

Target has some really cute stuff for newborns for the holiday season go and check it out. It would be in the baby isle. As for mom.... Why don't you help her cook or do things around the house..
