If the check had no name on it I would imagine that she'll get a slap on the wrists because the check wasnt make out to anyone and the person who signed it should be resonsible for it. However morally she did the wrong thing and its a sad indication of the world we live in that so many assume they have the right to do something like this :-( Finders keepers as a child meant the odd 20c and grown ups should apply it to their lives.

She should get a lawyer. If its a first time offense, she can go to jail, but probably will get probation, esp. if the is under 18. If she cannot afford a lawyer, she should get the name of the detective, get a good "sob story" together (tears and all) and turn herself in. Judges like people who "come clean", especially females. Men have to shave and cut their hair. Girls just have to be destitute and cry. Now if the judge is female, have "plan B" ready. "Guilty with an explaination" often works. I hope the amount of the check was worth the trouble she is in.

She could get fined or go to prison. That's why you shouldn't do stuff like that, not to mention it's wrong.
