A few ballroom lessons if possible would be perfect to help you learn to follow. Then practice, practice, practice. Not very useful if you need a crash course for a Christmas dance, but best overall. If formal lessons are not possible, there was a time back in the 1940's and 1950's when social dancing was much more common and much more refined than any time since 1960, so an elderly relative, or even a few nursing home residents, might be of help and would probably get a big boost from being asked. And finally, as a guy who was once your age a long time ago, I have to warn that some guys will try to use dance as an excuse to play grab-fanny, and you shouldn't put up with that at all.

keep your head up when dancing. Looking at the floor will only make you dizzy.

I would say not to think about what you're doing. Just go with the flow of the music.
