They are wired into each other, so when one goes off they all go off. They are 12 years old; Am I looking at a wiring problem or a smoke detector problem? How can I fix this and who should I go to.

I have tryed to change the batteries but that does not work!

Your smoke detectors are going bad and should be replaced. They actually have an expiration date on them somewhere (should be on the sticker on the back) and should be changed after ten years. I also recommend battery back up with electric ones.

sounds like a short but it could be needing a new battery

That is what it is suppose to do. In a real fire, they go off at every location to tell everyone their is a hazard. At least thats how mine works.

Replace them. they are only good for 5 to 7 yrs

You need to call electrical contractor. Don't take any chances here. This is very important.
