I believe if you are loyal to your dog your dog will be loyal back. My dog is 7 years old sometimes there are trips that i have to go on and he can't go along. He stays at my sisters house, she has called me a few times telling me he wouldn't eat and when she takes him for a walk he does his business and then just lays down he doesn't want to play or anything. So I tell her let me talk to him. She puts me on speaker phone and I let him know I will be home soon and that I love him. She calls me a few hours later and says that he is eating and playing with her children. The funny thing is when I leave I am only gone for 2-3 days, and he acts like I am gone for years when I come home.

Well, you won't be able to tell until you've bonded with the dog (via obedience training & then dog trials). You'll know if your dog makes eye contact, & wants to be with you....but it's easier to find out if the dog isn't loyal to you: trying to run away.
If you KNOW your dog, you know if you are bonded.

walk around outside if the dog stays by your side without a leash it is loyal. It will also stay beside you if a stranger approaches.

It is a fact animals give unconditional love, and that people are NOT capable of giving unconditional love. I have had a few dog bites in my time, but they are NOTHING compared to the unending supply of idiots that stabbed me in the back.

Have one of your friends start a fake fight with you.
Wrestle around and make a lot of noise.
Dogs will usually pick a side and join in. Don't be surprised if the dog picks your friend's side.
