I know many people mean to do just that, but don't, out of having busy lives at their new places they have settled into,

What helps keep the communication lines open?
Are you ever really completely gone, or do you check in periodically to see how everyone is doing?

If it is a true friendship you should always keep in touch. Yes it is a very difficult thing to do and it does take time. It all matters on how much you really care about that person. There is always e-mails and telephone calls. If you want to go old school you can mail a letter. I move around a lot and I always keep in touch with friends that I have met along the way. You never know where you might need a true friend to help you out someday.

for me i basically lost all of my old friends when i moved recently but i'd suggest trying to keep in touch over phone, IMs, and try your best to see them if you live remotely nearby.
sadly, your relationship isn't likely to be the same so i'd suggest focusing more on making new friends at your new location but all the same trying to keep in touch with the old.

I've always been the one checking in with friends and family. If I didn't, they wouldn't. kind of hurts.
