Metis... was the Titan goddess of good counsel, advise, planning, cunning, craftiness and wisdom.
Metis aided Zeus' war against the Titans by giving Cronus a drug which made him throw-up his recently consumed children. She became Zeus' first wife, but avoided Zeus at first through her metamorphic abilities.
Metis later prophesied to Zeus that she would give birth first to a girl and afterwards to a boy, who was to be more powerful than the father. For this reason Zeus ate her when she was pregnant with Athena. Later he himself gave birth to Athena, who emerged from his head, with some help from his son, Hephaestus.
According to Hesiod, Zeus devoured Metis on the advice of Uranus and Ge, who also revealed to him the destiny of his future son.

Metis, a goddess of wisdom, who was turned into a fly and swallowed by Zeus after he had slept with her and made her pregnant. Nine months later Athena was born, fully armed, from his forehead. Metis had actually been hammering on the helmet inside Zeus, very annoying for him. Other male gods had to help Zeus give birth to his daughter - by cleaving his head with an axe.

Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, the arts, industry, justice and skill. She was the favorite child of Zeus. She had sprung fully grown out of her father's head. Her mother was Metis, goddess of wisdom and Zeus' first wife. In fear that Metis would bear a son mightier than himself. Zeus swallowed her and she began to make a robe and helmet for her daughter. The hammering of the helmet caused Zeus great pain in the form of headaches and he cried out in agony. Skilled Hephaestus ran to his father and split his skull open and from it emerged Athena, fully grown and wearing her mother's robe and helmet. She is the virgin mother of Erichthnonius.

The answers above are good, but I would like to add an interesting detail.
Metis originally meant wisdom. Later, the meaning was changed to "nobody". This has been interpreted as a sexist comment about the "inferiority" of women.
