That is when a show takes a break to film some more shows without running repeats. Networks use their time slots to promote new shows or run miniseries.
Sometimes the show come back and sometimes they don't.

Hiatus is the same thing as a leave of absence. On television that means that no new episodes are aired for a given show. Hiatus can be indefinite like in the case of Deadwood or it could be as short as one week as in the case of House or four weeks as in the case of Heroes. Shoes typically go on hiatus during the playoffs or an election or during the holidays.

A break between original episodes of a series, often in the summer when most shows air reruns. also used when new shows are shelved while the network looks for a better time slot

If a new slot is not found, the show may be quietly canceled so Hiatus in regards to a new show is usually a bad sign
