I'm a manager at a computer company. I manage a team of SW Engineers (which I was, prior to becoming a manager). I make over $150K (but it took 20 years to get here). Pros: As a manager I have a lot of impact on the group's success. If I see something wrong, often I can fix it, or influence things to get an improvement. Cons: Sometimes you have to do unpleasant things like tell people they are not accomplishing as much as they should be. In the computer industry, things change a lot. It seems like over half the projects I've worked on were canceled.

Recommend it? If you have the right personality, including strong people and communication skills, willingness to take on the difficult parts of the job, leadership ability (daring to make a decision, ability to educate others on the reasons we need to do things, taking responsibility for you mistakes, praising your team for their successes), managing is a great job.
