Sometimes, if your vagina is tense or overly dry, there can besome discomfort when inserting a tampon. Relax and take your time; you'll learn to do it.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), which has been related to tampon use, essentially occurs becaus eof potnetial bacterial build-up when a tampon is worn for long periods of time; it is a very serious condition. The symptoms include headaches, stomach pains, and nausea, and if you think you're experiencing TSS you should go directly to the hospital. However, it is very uncommon (I believe only 2-3 women in every 100,000 experience it) and the fact that you're experiencing a little bit of discomfort when inserting a tampon is nothing to worry about.

(I went for years using pads because I couldn't figure the things out; what works for me is not using the applicators; your finger helps you be far more precise about comfortable placement. (Once a tampon is in properly, you should not be able to feel it inside you.))

It may hurt the first few times you use one. I was 14 when I started using tampons and the first time I put one in I jumped into the bathtub. This will make the tampon expand and that will make it more comfortable, but of course take it out and do it a couple more times, this will help. Plus, always use the right size of tampon for your flow. If you are not flowing very heavily and you use a large sized tampon this will be uncomfortable. If you are talking about toxic shock syndrome, don't worry. This has not been reported in the United States in over 50 years. Many people forget they have a tampon in and remember it days later, which is gross :) but not going to hurt you. Of course you should always use caution, but like I said, TSS hasn't been reported here for over 50 years.

Their have been cases of tampons causing Toxic Shock Syndrome, and yes it can kill you. However, those cases are few and far between. As long as you change your tampon every few hours and don't leave it in over 8 hours, you should be OK. IF you start to feel any of the symptoms like a sudden high fever (temperature), vomiting, a sunburn-like rash, diarrhea, fainting or feeling, faint, muscle aches, dizziness, or confusion, call you MD. HOWEVER....Just because you have these symptoms doesn't mean you have TSS. It could be a thousand other reasons.

I believe the "shock" that is being referred to when talking about tampons is the medical condition "Toxic Shock Syndrome" which can be caused by tampons. A quick google search will provide many hits.

It is not supposed to hurt, but if you are young and using regular sized tampons, it may hurt a little, because the tampon is bigger than your body can handle without stretching. Try smaller tampons or just suck it up.... It happens to the best of us!

if you leave a tampon in too long it can cause bacteria called Staphylococcus aureu to form causing toxic shock syndrome [tss]. never leave a tampon in for more than 8 hours. many people choose to sleep with a pad instead of a tampon for this reason.
