i have a 2001 tahoe with the 5.3L v8. I was slowing down to stop at a light and all of a sudden the motr started running rough and when i came to a stop it stalled. i tried to restart it about 5 times then i waited for about 30 seconds and it started right up without any problems after that. i was told the oxygen sensor could be bad. is there any way i can check this without having to take my car to a dealership and pay a arm and a leg for them to tell that it needs to be replaced?

check engine light was on only while it was running rough but is not on now so autozone can't check it. been there tried that and trust me the light has to be on while they use the scanner

If it is your oxygen sensor the check engine light would be on. If it is on, take it to Auto Zone to have them run a free diagnostic. I would be more inclined to think it is your fuel pump, or your fuel filter.

Two things, I use independent garages not dealers, the rates are less and when you get to know them the service is better than dealers.

Second, don't know about the sensor in the Tahoe, but the one in my car lit up the check engine light and when I took it off and looked inside it had an adjustment screw. I opened the screw a little and put back on the line and cleared the pron and I've been good to go ever since around a month. I bought a gizmo that hooks to my laptop that reads the cars computer and I got all the codes for my car with it. My mechanic doesn't know that though and he's never tried to screw me with unnecessary work.

Usually, if the oxygen is not working properly, the check engine light will come on and inform you that you will need some kind of service. If it does come on, a trip to a local auto parts store (advance, autozone, etc.) may plug their code reader into your car and let you know what is triggering the check engine light.

I would also check under the hood for any loose hoses. I once had a similar problem and found it to be a vacuum hose had fallen off from the throttle body area. I just plugged it back in and the engine ran normally again. Hope you find your problem soon.

An oxygen sensor code is hard code, once registered, it stays in the PCM until it is manually removed. While I doubt this is an O2 sensor issue, the poster who earlier claimed that a bad O2 sensor will not cause drivability issues is flat out wrong!

If you actually want to check the performance of any sensor in real time you need a real diagnostic scan tool, not some cheap code reader. That means you have to pay the big bucks for a real mechanic. If the problem is not occurring now and there is no code stored in the PCM then there is really nothing you can do until it recurs. It is hard to diagnose a problem that isn't occurring.

on an obd2 veh., that is, anything newer than a 95, an oxy sensor could go completely out and not affect the way the engine runs, there are multiple failsafes built into the system for that. what it will do, is drastically affect the tailpipe emissions and turn the chk engine lite on. you have another issue other than oxy sensor.it probably set a trouble code in the ecm, and a simple scan could likely pinpoint the problem. it's just not gonna be the oxy sensor at fault.

that does NOT sound like a O2 sensor problem.( but stranger things have happened.) a faulty O2 will NOTprevent the car from starting.
its hard to say exactly what it is without more info but with newer model vehicle like that- the car has the ability to "fix" itself through compensation so there could be a string of problems that led to this not just a bad part. the best way to find out is to have it checked out with a scan tool (the dealer will have the best) so you a least know where to start.
