Familiar problem like many others but with a twist.

1. My brother phones and tells me he had to reinstall windows after a virus was healed ... because it kept restarting ... couldn't even get it to boot into safe mode.

2. At my parents house, I boot my dad's computer (win2000) and get a warning from AVG about a virus ... being the happy clicker that I am i clicked "heal" ... and immediately had an oh oh moment. I had to go out, so i left the computer on so I could deal with it later in the night, but when I got back, the computer was in a perpetual state of restarting itself.

3. Checked the AVG forum and tried to boot to safe mode - NO GO.

4. Used Win2000 disk to try repair console to fix "winlogon.exe" file . restored file - NO FIX

5. Tried to register to access AVG forum ... AVG website registration broken ... email them to tell them... no response.

6. Planning my anti-AVG web site now.

7. Luckily my Dad's computer has triple boot ...

Q: anyone have advice for win2000 repair

Reformat your hardive and reinstall the OS. Don't use AVG, use this free scanner instead: http://www.free-av.com/ It work much better.

I have a good way to repair it but it will cause you to loose all data.

Reformat your computer, not the regular windows reformat, but use a tool called Darik's Boot and Nuke. It is a free program.

Reformatting just erases files, but if you have a really bad virus, it could stay in your computer even after reformat, but with Darik's Boot and Nuke, the program completely erases every single bit/byte on your hard drive.
