Keep the family structure solid. If a child has a solid upbringing and he/she has no reason to become a street kid. It all starts at home. Bob Mummford once said: "We take away their bibles in school, we give them back to them in prison."

The problem of street urchins goes back a long time in different societies. I think the problem arises out of poverty; a lack of public interest in these kids; and, to some degree, the lack of their social needs being fulfilled. If it is possible, maybe you could collaborate with some other people and try starting a youth group. This would help out a lot. If you occupy their minds and give them a purpose it will benefit them as well as yourself.

Most of these children have been abused.Would'nt the real question be ,"How to prevent child abuse from recurring generation to generation?"The beginning of an answer to that question,in my opinion, would be that we first become a more caring (less judgemental)society. As long as discrimination is fed to one another as if it were some type of religious right(I know of no religion that says,"Ignore the poor and the needy or you will end up like them.")Though that is how most people in our fearful society operate. We are fed fear constantly by our government. The message they send out is that the poor don't deserve any better, followed by a slew of misedjucated reasoning in which they have convinced themselves that they are absolved of doing the work of God.(That is to care for one another.)This is the problem.People don't really want to help. They just want to look good on Sundays.

I can't say that I have seen a "street kid"... even in the City of Boston, MA...USA.
We can't assume the REASON they are on the street. There are many! (Family conflict, orphans, abuse, poverty, crime, slaves, runaways, former prisoners, drugs, alcohol, mental illness, lack of education)
There have been reports that government makes it "easy" to live on the streets. (easy= plausible) It becomes a way of life.
Squatting ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squatting ) becomes a society... friends, a new family
No ONE person can solve the problem:

In our town we have a group of people who are preparing backpacks full of easy to eat food and handing them out to kids leaving school on Fridays to assure that they will have something to eat through the weekend . On Monday they bring the packs back to be refilled on Friday again . Some of these kids are only getting food at lunchtime during school

Stop giving them special laws to protect them from needing to do anything to make themselves better. Free welfare, free food, free housing, etc. takes away any desire to better yourself in society.
