I am thinking of driving from Sioux Falls to Omaha in early January, to save a plane ticket for such a short flight. I don't know anything about the weather in either of these areas except that there will be snow. How safe do you think this is, for those who know the area? What should I know? Are there any alternatives (train, bus, etc) to driving myself or flying? Thanks.

I have drove from Sioux Falls to Omaha several times to catch economical flights. It is hard to say what the weather is going to be like when it comes to January. It is a pretty strait shot down there, but again, who knows what the weather will bring. We do not have any train transportation here in Sioux Falls, bus may be an option for you but I am not sure how much that would cost. Best I can recommend is to check with the airlines on refund policies (if any), as well as if you know anyone in Omaha, you could stay with them a night early or so if the weather forecast is looking bad. Hope all goes well! I know the trips to Omaha can save big bucks on those plane tickets!

Like others have said, who knows what the weather will be like, Be careful of black ice, drive during the day. Another option is to take the bus from Sioux Falls to Omaha. Takes a little bit longer than driving yourself, but you can sit back, relax and leave the driving to someone else. Then once you get to Omaha, can take a taxi to the airport which shouldn't be too far away from the bus station. In the long run may cost you about the same taking the bus versus driving, give or take a few bucks, but at least you're not the one driving. Would be Jefferson Lines, http://www.jeffersonlines.com .

Its not a long trip at all. Depending on the weather, it could take you a few hours. It also depends on how your driving is. There is a lot of black ice on the roads that you cant see, but even the most skilled driver cant avoid it. It doesnt mean that theres always black ice on the roads at all times in the winter. Just depends on the weather. Drive in the daytime if possible. Easier to see the road, along with the sun on the road, it can melt any black ice that is there.

black snow(so EXTREMELY clear you cant see it trough the windsheld)can be on the road that causes your car to slide so its not so safe.
