Germany also known as Bavaria. They started out as a NO-name company making farming type equipment on their own farm, mainly to haul manure. The joke was made about a Bavarian Manure Wagon. Hence BMW As they started to actually form the company itself they decided that Manure Wagon wasn't going to fly so they looked for words to use that would make more sense but still match with BMW and came up with Bavarian Motor Works instead.
